THE 113-MILE CORRIDOR OF INTERSTATE 15 IN SAN BERNADINO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA BETWEEN BARSTOW, CALIFORNIA AND THE NEVADA BORDER ON WHICH THE COALITION FOCUSES ITS EFFORTS IS ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS STRETCHES OF HIGHWAY IN THE COUNTRY. IT IS THE MAJOR THOROUGHFARE CONNECTING LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA AND LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, WITH 40,000 OR MORE PASSENGER VEHICLES AND COMMERCIAL VEHICLES CROSSING THE BORDER EACH DAY. IT IS ALSO THE DEADLIEST HIGHWAY IN CALIFORNIA, AND A DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY OCCURS ON THE CORRIDOR EVERY FOUR DAYS ON AVERAGE.(CON'TD ON SCH O)THE COALITION FOCUSES ITS EDUCATIONAL AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES ON THIS HIGHWAY CORRIDOR. IT ENGAGES IN RESEARCH, STUDY, AND ANALYSIS OF THE SAFETY AND ECONOMIC CONCERNS RELATED TO THE CORRIDOR, INCLUDING BY HIRING ENGINEERING EXPERTS AND CONSULTANTS TO COMPILE DATA AND ISSUE REPORTS. IT THEN HIRES CONSULTANTS TO DISSEMINATE THIS INFORMATION AND RESEARCH TO STAKEHOLDERS INTERESTED IN IMPROVING THE SAFETY OF THE CORRIDOR, INCLUDING THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (CALTRANS), OTHER POLICYMAKERS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
