Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Programs described in its return (2)
  1. $58,416 spent. The Maritime Music & Tradition Society presents an annual Sea Music Festival; through the festival and other concerts, lectures, demonstrations, and song-sharing sessions, we enact our mission of preserving and encouraging maritime music, from deepwater sailing to inland waterways, and building community. The 3nd Connecticut Sea Music Festival was held from June 7-10, 2024 in Essex CT. The Festival featured 5 performance stages throughout the town and 28 performers, with evening concerts at a marquee tent on the grounds of the CT River Museum. There were 41 workshops, 3 evening concerts, plus pop-up performances at 4 other locations in town. An outdoor demonstration area provided presentations and workshops on maritime cultural traditions and skills. The Festival included an accessible, barrier-free venue for families and young children, the Family Stage. The demonstrations and Family Stage performances particularly carry out the goals of our nonprofit, all-volunteer organization: To foster and nurture a continuing interest in maritime and traditional music and skills, so that this important aspect of both musical and nautical history remains a vibrant aspect of contemporary cultural life and so that these traditions and skills may be passed on to the next generation.
  2. Symposium on the Music of the Sea: This one day symposium, free and open to public, featured papers by international scholars, in person and via Zoom, demonstrating the world-wide reach of sea music. Recordings of the Symposium are archived on YouTube, expanding our audience beyond those able to visit Connecticut.
