What it says it does

We advocate for legislation and influence the decisions of our elected leaders in California to pass Ranked Choice Voting in the states various cities counties and state elections. Our volunteers and leadership provide domain expertise around what is Ranked Choice Voting as well as how to write legislation for implementing Ranked Choice Voting in various California municipalities. Our volunteers also attend public events to promote Ranked Choice Voting by explaining to the public what it is how it benefits them and how it depolarizes politics. We spend approximately 30 percent of our efforts on education and the remainder on advocacy and support of passing Ranked Choice Voting legislation.

Financial health

We do not score finances when yearly spending is very small or the return has too little detail. The ratios stop meaning much at that size.

Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Impact evidence

Describes programs. Its tax return describes what it does but we have found no measurable results in it.

Programs described in its return (3)
  1. $70,659 spent. Supporting the campaign to pass ranked choice voting for the city of Richmond California in Nov 2024. Cal RCV raised over $50,000 from partner nonprofits and individuals that support election reform to fund mailers and other campaign activities. We also provided campaign consulting providing information about RCV and strategic input. Cal RCV works with local partners when possible and for Richmond the local partner campaigning in favor of Measure L is East Bay Working Families.
  2. $12,995 spent. Supporting efforts to pass ranked choice voting in Santa Clara County California. As part of an ongoing effort to get the Board of Supervisors to implement RCV based on a 1998 measure that was passed by voters that authorizes the county to move to RCV also called Instant Runoff Voting.
  3. $12,000 spent. Voter outreach and education not specific to any one campaign. Across the state of California our staff and volunteers regularly canvass events to educate the general public about what ranked choice voting is how it works and why we believe its an important reform for California. These activities lay the groundwork for future ballot measure campaigns and legislative lobbying efforts by building grassroots awareness and support for RCV.
