What it says it does

The City Tutors (CT) is NYC's educational subway-a free, citywide learning and career center open to everyone, centering first-gen, immigrant, and historically low-resourced communities. We operate through a select network of partner "Stops" that run year-round: some offer on-site 1:1 tutoring; mentorship appears on-site through career-pathway events and workshops. Learners can also "hop on" virtually for individualized tutoring and mentoring at a time and pace that works for them. CT is powered by volunteers and sustained by project-based and yearlong sponsorships. We're a 501(c)(3) that began as a CUNY program, founded by Garri Rivkin, an educator and CUNY alum who immigrated to NYC as a refugee.

Impact evidence

Describes programs. Its tax return describes what it does but we have found no measurable results in it.

Programs described in its return (2)
  1. $81,504 spent. The City Tutors program provides academic upskilling for K-12 and first-year college learners, ESL/English support, and an adult HSE/GED track in foundational reading, writing, and math. Scheduling is fully flexible-virtual drop-in and 1:1 sessions-so learners can add hours when life allows and pause when needed, which keeps them engaged and builds confidence. Tutoring averages about five sessions per learner; since 2020 we've delivered 5,000+ hours. When appropriate, we link learning to careers through embedded course support and practitioner-led skill sessions in sectors such as healthcare and finance/corporate.
  2. $115,458 spent. The City Mentors Program blends self-paced 1:1 support (virtual by default) with hybrid events; people move between them as needed-some gather facts about industries and roles, others explore multiple interests, and those ready to move quickly focus on document development and interview practice. More than 1,000 volunteer mentors across industries provide this support. Since 2020, we've facilitated 12,000+ mentorship sessions and 250 events; about 60% of learners arrive without individualized professional-development access. After two sessions, over 50% of learners identify a target field or role and 65% set concrete next steps; after three sessions, 35% of job seekers report securing at least one interview. Mentorship engagements average about two sessions, with re-entry as needs evolve.
