Staged Reading Series and Community Discussions: Theatre Diaspora takes pride in its commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and education through the creation of enhanced staged readings followed by engaging panel discussions. Beyond mere performances, our enhanced staged readings serve as immersive experiences, where the audience is captivated by the power of storytelling. These readings are carefully curated to amplify underrepresented voices, particularly those within the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Following each compelling reading, we seamlessly transition into thought-provoking panel discussions. These discussions serve as a bridge between the narratives presented on stage and the real-world issues they illuminate. Our aim is not only to entertain but to initiate conversations that spark awareness, understanding, and empathy. Through this dual approach of enhanced staged readings and panel discussions, Theatre Diaspora creates events that go beyond the theatrical, transforming our space into a dynamic platform for conversation, education, and community engagement. Staged readings of Inside Out and Back Again by written by Min Kahng. Inside Out & Back Again is the story of a ten-year-old Ha and her family fleeing from Vietnam to Alabama, where she dreams of her beloved papaya tree and struggles to adjust in a strange new land. Thanhha Lai's award-winning book of poetry comes to life in this on-stage retelling of a young girl and her family's journey to find a new home. This staged reading will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dmae Lo Roberts, coproduced by MediaRites. Theatre Diaspora also partnered with Asian American Town to host a local AAPI Film Screening Festival at the Portland Night Market. Theatre Diaspora also had a presence at the Tiger Tiger Festival, a Celebration of our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Communities in Fernhill Park.
