Financial health

We do not score finances when yearly spending is very small or the return has too little detail. The ratios stop meaning much at that size.

Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Impact evidence

Describes programs. Its tax return describes what it does but we have found no measurable results in it.

Programs described in its return (1)
  1. FoBI met monthly to ensure our goals were being met and that we continued to educate the public about the island. We were present at many local events, and we presented the history of the island to hundreds of people. We also educated them on how they can get involved. We presented to several historical societies, each Quarter at Rowan College at Burlington County LIFE (Learning is for Everyone), County events, and senior centers. Island clean-ups were ongoing from March through October. Hundreds of people accessed the island and cleaned up significant amounts of debris that continues to be brought in by the tides, as well as the approximate 50,000 pounds of metal debris from the 1978 eviction of the 80+ summer homes that were never moved off the island. We worked with schools to bring students to the island for STEM programming. Princeton University created an iNatural program to help school children to learn about the flora and fauna of the island, and we assisted in getting those students to the island. In addition, we gave many tours to both influencers and the general public as time permitted. We worked closely with the City of Burlington's Mayor and other city leaders to ensure they were kept up to date on all activities being scheduled on the island. We provided transportation for stakeholders to the island, including Doane Academy educators. We are working with the New Jersey DEP to move two large piles of metal debris off the island and recycled. It took hundreds of volunteer hours to move the debris that was created by the City in 1978 when they brought in bulldozers to shove the homes into piles. We estimate the remaining debris to weigh approximately 45,000 pounds. It is our hope to get the debris removed in 2026.
