What it says it does

SAPPY MOFFITT FIELD FOUNDATION INC exists to establish and maintain a baseball field -- "Foundry Field" -- at the publicly-owned Southeast Park in South Bend, Indiana. A portion of the park originally designated for a baseball facility was never completed and we are partnering with local government and community organizations to establish a field for public use. The specific purposes of the organization are to: build and maintain a high-quality baseball field in an under-utilized segment of Southeast Park for the use of the general public; work with community organizations to provide programming for local youth; make a unique cultural and artistic contribution through field design and culturally-rich public art; and preserve, promote, and engage baseball's cultural impact in the South Bend area through displays, design elements, and programming at the field.

Financial health

We do not score finances when yearly spending is very small or the return has too little detail. The ratios stop meaning much at that size.

Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Impact evidence

Describes programs. Its tax return describes what it does but we have found no measurable results in it.

Programs described in its return (2)
  1. The initial phase of building Foundry Field was completed, transforming an empty, unused green space at an urban public park in South Bend, Indiana, into a unique, high-quality community baseball field. Funding was allocated to landscape architecture, excavation and grading, field construction with high quality ground materials for infield and mound and warning track, purchase and installation of a pole and netting backstop system, installation of an irrigation system, renewal of outfield concrete wall surfacing, painting, and landscaping.
  2. In partnership with Notre Dame's Center for Social Concerns, a groundbreaking and several mural unveiling ceremonies for Foundry Field have been held in the last two years, inviting neighbors, community partners, city leaders, donors, and special honored guests. The murals have honored and celebrated players from the field's namesake, the Foundry Giants, a black baseball team of Studebaker car factory workers from the early 20th century, as well as other historical teams from the area. The artists have spent time in workshops with youth from the adjacent Boys and Girls Club and nearby Riley High School, sharing about their work and mentoring young artists about navigating the art world and establishing sustainable art careers. Sappy Moffit Field Foundation representatives spend time with adults, teens, and youth in the community, sharing the sport of baseball and telling histories and stories about the Foundry Giants players and their impact on the community.
