Programs described in its return (3)
- $111,975 spent. CULTIVATING RESPONSIBLE USE OF WILDLANDS: THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT WAS ACHIEVED PRIMARILY BY FOCUSING ON WINTER BACKCOUNTRY RECREATION IN THE TETON RANGE,WYOMING. 20 BACKCOUNTRY AMBASSADORS (PAID AND VOLUNTEERS) SERVED AT KEY TRAILHEADS AND IN POPULAR USE AREAS WHERE THEY INTERACTED WITH THE PUBLIC TO ANSWER QUESTIONS AND DISCUSS THE NEED FOR RESPONSIBLE USE AND SAFETY. TETON PASS HAS OVER 76,000 RECREATIONISTS ON TETON PASS IN THE WINTER AND AN AVERAGE OF 500 DAILY BACKCOUNTRY SKIERS. OUR AMBASSADORS INTERACTED WITH OVER 6000 USERS. OUR ORGANIZATION ALSO RAN A FREE VAN SHUTTLE SERVICE TO THE TETON PASS TRAILHEADS, WHICH REDUCED THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE DRIVING TO THESE DESTINATIONS AND DECREASING THE CONGESTION AT THE BUSIEST PARKING AREA. THESE PROGRAMS WERE OPERATED IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH THE NATIONAL FOREST SERVICE AND OTHER AGENCIES.
- $26,400 spent. IMPROVING MOUNTAIN SAFETY: TEEWINOT INSTITUTE INITIATED A PROGRAM TO DEVELOP THE SEARCH AND RESCUE CAPACITY ON PK LENNIN, A 23,406 MOUNTAIN IN KYGYZSTAN. OVER 1000 CLIMBERS GO TO PK LENNIN EACH YEAR AND HISTORICALLY THE MOUNTAIN HAS HAD NO FORMAL SEARCH AND RESCUE PROGRAM FOR. A MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THIS PROGRAM WAS TO COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL MOUNTAINEERING ORGANIZATIONS AND THE BRITISH MOUNTAIN MEDICINE ASSOCIATION IN STARTING THE PROGRAM. AS A PART OF THESE EFFORTS, OUR TEAM WAS THE LEAD IN TRAINING LOCALS IN SEARCH AND RESCUE, DOING SEVERAL MOUNTAINEERING RESCUES AND ALSO HELPING CLIMBERS SUFFERRING FROM THE EFFECTS OF HIGH-ALTITUDE SICKNESS.
- $7,000 spent. CONSERVING WILDLANDS: SEVERAL PROGRAMS ADDRESSED THIS FOCUS AREA. THE MUNGER PROJECT UNDERTOOK A PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT HELPED LEAD TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MUNGER RECREATION AREA IN TETON COUNTY, WYOMING. IN THE ARTIC, TEEWINOT PRODUCED A RESEARCH REPORT ON THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ON HABITAT IMPORTANT TO CARIBOU. PUBLIC EDUCATION ABOUT CONSERVATION OF THE IMPERILED TETON BIGHORN SHEEP HERD ENCOURAGED BACKCOUNTRY SKIERS TO AVOID IMPORTANT SHEEP HABITAT. AND PUBLIC MEETINGS AND EDUCATION HELPED INFORM THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE PROPOSED PLAN TO EXPAND THE GRAND TARGHEE RESORT INTO ITS SURROUNDING WILDLANDS.
