- $277,812 spent. As an animal rescue organization, the New River Humane Society served 1315 cats kittens and 483 dogs puppies during the fiscal year ended June 2025. Our staff, volunteers, and supporters make it possible each year for us to operate as a no-kill shelter and continue to provide the very best for each animal, especially after separating from the county shelter in 2022. Veterinarians ultimately recommended euthanizing approximately 1 animal due to service illness, injury or aggression. Additionally 1621 animals went to reputable rescue parters, 117 were locally adopted 6 escaped or were released, 38 died from sudden illness and 11 were reclaimed. During the year, NRHS sately transported 431 canines 1190 felines through our Rescue Transport Program relying solely on volunteers to network with over 20 rescue partners in VA,MD,PA, NY WV. A team of approximately 8-10 volunteer drivers averaged 2000 to 3000 miles per month transporting animals.
- $32,152 spent. The Low-Cost Spay Neuter Program provided financial assistance to over 68 dog owners 111 cat owners in our communities for spaying neutering their pets. NRHS is dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted and unplanned litters. Pet owners complete an application and make a donation to receive a voucher which they can use at one of three local veterinarians in our area. This program is possible becauise of donations grants. We also work to reduce the feral cat population in our community by partnering with Fayette Veterinary Hospital in a feral cat sterilization program. The vet also offers special weeks during the winter when they accept feral cats from the community for spaying or neutering under a cat colony sterilization program. With both the feral cat sterilization the cat colony sterilization progrms, the vet tips/notches the cats ears before releasing them back to the community whre they were found.
