- $917,964 spent. Uzazi Village's primary purpose is to reduce maternal and infant mortality in our immediate community-particularly among African American and other childbearing families-through culturally responsive perinatal support, workforce development, and community education. Through our Sister Doula/Perinatal Community Health Worker (community-based doula) program, Uzazi continues to prepare candidates of color to enter and lead in the perinatal health field through comprehensive training, continuing education, and career pipeline opportunities. Our services include childbirth education, breastfeeding support, newborn care, baby-wearing, fatherhood and dads' engagement classes, and ongoing virtual education options that remain accessible alongside in-person programming to ensure families can receive support in ways that best meet their needs. Since adapting during the COVID-19 pandemic, Uzazi Village has intentionally sustained both virtual and in-person service models, expanding accessibility and deepening community reach. In the past year, we distributed more than 25,750 diapers to families in need and served approximately 1,133 clients annually through direct services, educational programming, outreach initiatives, and family-centered support systems. These efforts reflect our unwavering commitment to equity in birth outcomes, whole-family wellness, and addressing systemic disparities impacting Black maternal and infant health. In August 2021, we opened the Ida Mae Patterson Center for maternal and infant wellness.
