Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Impact evidence

Describes programs. Its tax return describes what it does but we have found no measurable results in it.

Programs described in its return (3)
  1. $52,123 spent. During the 2024-2025 fiscal year, Bloomington Early Music hosted 12 free public concerts in association with the 2025 Bloomington Early Music Festival, our large annual event. In addition to these concerts, held both live in Bloomington, Indiana and virtually online, the festival included 5 community workshops and an educational happy hour on historical ties between music and drink. This year's festival focused on Early Music and the African Diaspora, exploring by and for enslaved Black Africans and their descendants over more than four centuries and across three continents. The festival also included the second iteration of our New Neighbors Art Exhibit, a partnership with Exodus Refugee Immigration Inc. A few weeks before the festival, we welcomed children ages 5 to 15 along with their families for a day of making art, which was then displayed in our performance venues throughout the festival itself. The festival's concerts also included a community showcase featuring a variety of local performers and the culminating performance by the students of the Bloomington Early Music Immersion Program.
  2. $68,309 spent. Bloomington Early Music provides fiscal sponsorship to three organizations, which are grouped together here. Bloomington Bach Cantata Project (BBCP) and Alchymy Viols are local ensembles, both of which provide regular free performances. The BBCP performs 6 cantata concerts each year modeled on those led by J.S. Bach in the 18th century. Alchymy Viols is a viol consort that performs across Indiana. The third organization for which we provide fiscal sponsorship is the Indiana Hurdy-Gurdy Workshop, a week-long residential workshop where participants learn about performing a particular type of early musical instrument. Attendees of the workshop paid a registration fee and housing costs. Because this workshop takes place in September, registrations cross fiscal years. The September 2025 workshop had 23 attendees.
  3. $5,157 spent. The Bloomington Early Music Immersion Program is a tuition free workshop for young string players in the Bloomington, IN area to learn about early music performance techniques from expert instructors, culminating in a performance for the local community. The May 2025 BEMI program included 11 student participants.
