Financial health

We do not score finances when yearly spending is very small or the return has too little detail. The ratios stop meaning much at that size.

Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Impact evidence

Describes programs. Its tax return describes what it does but we have found no measurable results in it.

Programs described in its return (1)
  1. $106,199 spent. BSPAC provides children's dance classes in ballet, tap and hip-hop. These classes are subsidized by BSPAC in that we charge a minimal monthly fee. These classes are taught by a qualified dance instructor. They are held once a week except for holidays. A dance recital is held at least once a year. BSPAC provides additional funding to cover the expense of the teacher and costumes for the recital. There is a free children's theater class taught in the summer that introduces the children to the theater., how to act and various other jobs such as costuming, lights, etc. In addition, several professional acts that perform in teh seasonal productions give performances to the elementary, middle and high school students. For instance, City Ballet of San Diego does a show for the elementary students where they explain about ballet and then dance a segment of their show. Various instrumental groups also give student performances earlier in the daytime, before they perform at night for BSPAC audiences. Local amatuer actors are the performers in the two plays and/or readings each year. The performers are often first time actors and as such are given instructions by the Artistic Director as to acting skills, movement, timing and vocal projection. The actors perform in front of an audience. In addition, BSPAC usually has two musical productions each year. Singers and musicians are provided a venue for their talents. Many are first time performers in a theater setting and are given guidance by the musical directors. BSPAC theatre is a 177-seat performing arts centre, recently upgraded to meet current building standards and provide the local community with a first-class venue which can be made available for several other charitable and non-profit organizations on a cost-recovery basis. In that way, BSPAC serves the broader community in addition to its education and training funtion in the performing arts in Borrego Springs.
