Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Programs described in its return (1)
  1. $82,319 spent. IN 2024 THE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA SERVED A TOTAL OF 39 DIFFERENT FAMILIES FOR SUPERVISED VISITATION. SUPERVISED VISITATION IS OFFERED TO FAMILIES WHO HAVE AT LEAST ONE PARENT WHO IS COURT ORDERED, TYPICALLY IN A DIVORCE/CHILD CUSTODY CASE, AS AN OPTION TO EXERCISE THEIR TIME SHARING UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A PROFESSIONAL DUE TO CONCERNS THAT MAY PLACE A CHILD(REN) AT RISK OF HARM. SOME EXAMPLES OF THE CORE ISSUES THAT CAN BE PRESENT WHEN FAMILIES START THE PROCESS OF SUPERVISED VISITATION ARE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, CHILD ABUSE/NEGLECT, AND/OR PARENTAL MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS. THE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA (FRC) IS AFFILIATED WITH THE SUPERVISED VISITATION NETWORK WHICH FOCUSES ON BEST PRACTICE STANDARDS FOR SUPERVISED VISITS. THE PROCESS FOR A FAMILY TO BECOME INVOLVED WITH STARTS WITH A COURT ORDER. THIS ORDER APPOINTS THE FRC TO BE THE SUPERVISOR AND PROVIDES DIRECTIONS FOR THE FAMILIES AS TO WHO IS PAYING FOR SERVICES, THE POLICIES TO FOLLOW, FREQUENCY OF VISITS, AND THE GOALS OF THE SUPERVISED VISITATION. ONCE A FAMILY HAS A COURT ORDER THEY CONTACT FRC AND SCHEDULE ORIENTATIONS. ORIENTATIONS ARE COMPLETED WITH THE SUPERVISED PARENT, THE NON-SUPERVISED PARENT, AND THE CHILDREN AS NEEDED SO EVERYONE CAN BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE AGENCY, THE FACILITY, THE RULES AND REQUIREMENTS, AND ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. AFTER THE ORIENTATIONS ARE COMPLETED THE VISITS ARE SCHEDULED. THE STAFF OF FRC MAINTAIN NEUTRAL STANDING SO THAT THE FOCUS CAN REMAIN ON WHAT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CHILD. THIS BECOMES A CRUCIAL POINT IN HIGH CONFLICT CASES AS EMOTIONS ARE OFTEN HEIGHTENED AND THE FOCUS IS EASILY SWAYED TO A PLACE OF HURT RATHER THAN A FOCUS OF WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CHILD. DURING THE TIME THE FAMILY IS PARTICIPATING IN SERVICES THE STAFF BOTH MODEL HOW TO ADDRESS SITUATIONS AND PROVIDE FEEDBACK TO THE VARIOUS FAMILY MEMBERS WITH A FOCUS OF INCREASING PARENT/CHILD BOND AND ATTACHMENT. AT TIMES THIS MEANS TO BOTH THE SUPERVISED AND THE NON-SUPERVISED PARENT. ONE EXAMPLE OF THE SUCCESS OF THIS MODEL OF SUPERVISION IS THE "JOHN" FAMILY. (THE NAMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO PROTECT PRIVACY.) THE JOHN'S WERE IN THE PROCESS OF A DIVORCE AND TWIN 12 YEAR OLD CHILDREN. ALLEGATIONS OF CHILD ABUSE LED MRS. JOHN TO BE COURT ORDERED TO SUPERVISED VISITS WITH HER CHILDREN. WHEN THE FAMILY STARTED AT FRC THE CHILDREN WERE NOTED TO BE VERY RUDE AND DISENGAGED WITH THE MOTHER. THE MOTHER WOULD OFFER PRAISE AND TRY TO ENGAGE WITH THE CHILDREN HOWEVER THEY WOULD OFTEN DISREGARD HER PRAISE AND STAY DISENGAGED. THIS CAN BE INDICATIVE OF THE HURT AND TRAUMA CAUSED BY THE ALLEGATIONS. THROUGH OBSERVATION AT FIRST IT WAS NOTED THAT THE CHILDREN WOULD ONLY ENGAGE WITH THEMSELVES AND WOULD NOT LISTEN TO THEIR MOTHER. THE STAFF STARTED TO ENGAGE THE MOTHER AND CHILDREN DURING THEIR SESSIONS, PLAYING GAMES, AND ENGAGING THEM IN CONVERSATION. THE FEEDBACK OFFERED TO MRS. JOHN WAS FOCUSED ON HOW TO ENGAGE WITH THE CHILD WHILE STILL SETTING APPROPRIATE PARENTAL BOUNDARIES. WHEN THE CHILDREN WOULD START TO MISBEHAVE OF TALK POORLY TO MOM THE STAFF WOULD INTERVENE AND REDIRECT THE CONVERSATION EMPOWERING ALL MEMBERS TO FEEL HEARD WHICH DECREASED THE CONFLICT BETWEEN MRS. JOHN AND THE CHILDREN. THIS DRASTICALLY IMPROVED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FAMILY MEMBERS WHICH ALLOWED THE FAMILY TO PHASE OUT OF SERVICES AND RETURN TO COURT IN A SUCCESSFUL MANNER. ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS THE "SMITH" FAMILY. THIS FAMILY WAS WITH THE FRC FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MONTHS. THE SMITH FAMILY HAD TWO CHILDREN AGES 12 AND 8. MR. SMITH WAS COURT ORDERED TO SUPERVISED VISITATION DUE TO ALLEGATIONS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSE TOWARDS THE OLDEST CHILD. DURING THE INITIAL PHASES OF THE VISITS THE OLDEST CHILD WOULD NOT ENGAGE WITH THE FATHER AND THE YOUNGEST WOULD OFTEN DISENGAGE AFTER ENGAGING INITIALLY. THE STAFF OF THE FRC STARTED SPEAKING WITH THE CHILDREN PRIOR TO THE VISIT IN AN EFFORT TO ASSIST WITH REDUCING ANXIETY AND THEN PROVIDED MR. SMITH FEEDBACK ON A VARIETY OF ITEMS. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MR. SMITH WOULD ULTIMATELY BENEFIT FROM PARENTING CLASSES AND WAS REFERRED TO PARENTING CLASSES. THE CHILDREN WERE ALSO RECOMMENDED TO ATTEND THERAPY AND STARTED ATTENDING THERAPY. THE STAFF WOULD THEN DISCUSS WITH THE CHILDREN BEFORE AND AFTER VISITS HOW TO IMPLEMENT THE VARIOUS STRATEGIES THEY WERE LEARNING IN THERAPY IN THE VISITS WITH MR. SMITH. THESE TWO REFERRALS INITIATED A PLATFORM FOR HEALING AND LED THE FAMILY TO BEING ABLE TO GRADUATE.
