Financial health

We do not score finances when yearly spending is very small or the return has too little detail. The ratios stop meaning much at that size.

Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Impact evidence

Describes programs. Its tax return describes what it does but we have found no measurable results in it.

Programs described in its return (4)
  1. $23,671 spent. Held open houses at our layout for the general public. By doing this we educated the public on railroad operations and the critical role railroads play in our history and commerce. It also provided an opportunity to expose young people to the engaging and education hobby of model railroading.
  2. $10,186 spent. We held our annual Railfair, which has been held in excess of fifty years, at a local hotel, with an attendance of over 1400 people. This provided a venue for a number of model railroad clubs to set up model railroad modules advancing the public's understanding of the railroad's place in the history and heritage of our area as well as learning how modern railroading contributes to our economy and how goods, services and passengers are safely and efficiently moved over our national transportation network. Approximately a third of the attendees were children, who learned about a valuable hobby requiring a wide variety of skills, many STEM related. This also includes providing free table space for other 501(c)(3) organizations.
  3. $828 spent. Conducted presentations at five model railroad shows using the Association's portable display module, test track, and other displays. By the use of our portable demonstration module, we gave members of the public, both adults and children the opportunity to operate trains on this display. In addition to simulating how real railroads operate, it gave the public the opportunity to learn about the latest technology in computer control through a specific application to model railroading. In addition, we introduced the public to the family hobby of model railroading.
  4. $525 spent. Trains for Tots Program: This is an outreach program we have with the goal of promoting the hobby of model railroading among children ages 2-8. We feel if we can get the young children interested in the hobby, then as they get older , they will pursue the hobby even more. The association purchases small starter train sets and donates them to 501c3 charities such as Toys for Tots, Salvation Army, Boys & girls club, and others in our area. Donations typically occur during the holiday season when demand is high. In addition to exposing children to the hobby, our hope is that we give needy children a happier holiday season than they may have otherwise.
