DESPITE THE COLLEGE'S BEST EFFORTS TO CONTAIN COSTS, EVEN WITH THE LOWEST TUITION IN OUR REGION, TUITION, FEES, TRANSPORTATION, AND EVEN SUSTENANCE ARE OBSTACLES FOR MANY STUDENTS WHO HAVE A PROFOUND AND COMPELLING NEED FOR ASSISTANCE. ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS THE VIKING ROADS (RESOURCES FOR OBTAINING ASSOCIATE DEGREES AND SUCCESS) PROGRAM, WHICH REMOVES IMPEDIMENTS TO GRADUATION BY PROVIDING TUITION SUPPORT, TRANSPORTATION FUNDING, BOOK STIPEND, AND MANDATORY COUNSELING. A RECENT STUDY PUBLISHED BY THE ACADEMIC RESEARCH GROUP MDRC DEMONSTRATED THAT STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN VIKING ROADS GRADUATED AT A RATE 12% HIGHER THAN A CONTROL GROUP.
