Programs described in its return (3)
  1. $75,163 spent. CRIMINAL JUSTICE:SOPHIA'S CRIMINAL JUSTICE TASK FORCE (CJTF) CONTINUES TO ADVANCE MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS AND ACTION AROUND JUSTICE REFORM IN WAUKESHA COUNTY AND ACROSS THE STATE OF WISCONSIN. MEETING MONTHLY, THE GROUP BRINGS TOGETHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO BELIEVE OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM CAN BE MORE FAIR AND HUMANE. THE CJTF'S WORK CENTERS ON THREE KEY GOALS: EDUCATING THE PUBLIC AND FAITH COMMUNITIES ABOUT CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM, ENGAGING LEGISLATORS AND OTHER DECISION-MAKERS THROUGH CONSISTENT ISSUE-BASED COMMUNICATION, AND BUILDING GRASSROOTS SUPPORT THAT CAN SUSTAIN LONG-TERM CHANGE. ONE ONGOING EFFORT HAS BEEN SENDING MONTHLY LETTERS TO POLICYMAKERS ADDRESSING ISSUES SUCH AS DIVERSION VS. INCARCERATION, SOLITARY CONFINEMENT, AFFORDABLE FAMILY PHONE ACCESS FOR INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF STRONG REENTRY SUPPORT. EDUCATION AND COLLABORATION HAVE ALSO BEEN A MAJOR PART OF THIS YEAR'S WORK. THE TASK FORCE HOSTED AN INSPIRING EDUCATIONAL EVENT FEATURING TALIB AKBAR, WHO SPOKE ABOUT THE REALITIES AND IMPACT OF SOLITARY CONFINEMENT. MEMBERS ALSO PARTICIPATED IN TRANSFORMATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE TRAINING LED BY MARK RICE, WISCONSIN TRANSFORMATIONAL JUSTICE CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR AT WISDOM. THE CJTF HAS ALSO BUILT CONNECTIONS WITH CARROLL UNIVERSITY, COLLABORATING WITH A GRANT WRITING CLASS AND PRESENTING TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDENTS. IN ADDITION, WE PARTNERED WITH WISDOM AFFILIATE FREE, AN ORGANIZATION THAT SUPPORTS DIRECTLY IMPACTED WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SHAPING HUMANE POLICIES AND PRACTICES RELATED TO INCARCERATION AND JUSTICE REFORM.
  2. IMMIGRATION TASK FORCE:SOPHIA HAS ALSO MADE NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS THROUGH OUR DEDICATED WORK IN THE AREA OF IMMIGRATION THROUGH OUR IMMIGRATION TASK FORCE. OVER THE PAST YEAR, WE HAVE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN EFFORTS TO DRIVE CHANGE AT BOTH THE STATE AND FEDERAL LEVELS, ADVOCATING FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM AND POLICIES THAT PROMOTE INCLUSIVITY AND SUPPORT IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES. THE TASK FORCE IS ORGANIZING EDUCATIONAL FORUMS FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC IN ORDER TO DISPEL IMMIGRATION MYTHS, SHARE PERSONAL STORIES FROM IMMIGRANTS TO HUMANIZE THEIR EXPERIENCES, AND UTILIZE MEDIA TO BROADEN PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING. THROUGH OUR BILINGUAL MEDIUM (WEBSITE, YEARBOOK, E-MAIL, ETC.) WE HAVE ALSO EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF ADDRESSING SOCIAL ISSUES FACED BY THE LATINO COMMUNITY. IN 2025, WE FOCUSED ON TOPICS SUCH AS "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS", THE NEED TO RETAIN PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH BI-LINGUAL PROGRAMING AS WELL AS OTHER EDUCATION AND WORK OPPORTUNITIES. THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS UNDERSCORE SOPHIA'S COMMITMENT TO PROMOTING IMMIGRANT RIGHTS, FOSTERING INCLUSIVITY, AND ADVOCATING FOR POLICIES THAT RECOGNIZE THE DIGNITY AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF ALL INDIVIDUALS, REGARDLESS OF IMMIGRATION STATUS. BY ACTIVELY ENGAGING IN COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY, WE ARE WORKING TOWARDS A MORE EQUITABLE SOCIETY THAT VALUES AND UPLIFTS IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES.

DURING LANDLORD ENGAGEMENT LUNCHEONS, SOPHIA TEAM MEMBERS, COLLABORATING WITH THE HOUSING ACTION COALITION, HELP LANDLORDS TO UNDERSTAND THE BARRIERS THAT TENANTS FACE AND THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO MITIGATE RISKS FOR LANDLORDS. THE GOAL IS EDUCATION AND AWARENESS. THE PURPOSE IS TO INCREASE RENTAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE TRADITIONALLY SCREENED OUT DURING THE APARTMENT APPLICATION PROCESS, TYPICALLY PEOPLE DEPENDING ON HOUSING VOUCHERS, OR WITH A PREVIOUS INCIDENT OF EVICTION. IN FEBRUARY, TASKFORCE MEMBERS SHARE INFORMATION EVENTS SUCH AS THE HOUSING ACTION COALITION'S "COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR" FUNDRAISER EVENT TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE GAP BETWEEN WAGES AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND THE SERVICES NEEDED TO PREVENT HOMELESSNESS.
