What it says it does

The Hummingbird Conservation Networks (HCNs) is the expanded non-profit organization built upon the Hummingbird Monitoring Network (HMN) foundation. Notably, HMN had focused its efforts on science-based monitoring and studying of hummingbird populations to obtain important information supporting the conservation of these magnificent creatures. However, to better realize our mission of "Maintaining hummingbird diversity and abundance throughout the Americas," we needed to integrate community-based conservation ideas into HMN's science-based beginning. We endeavor to offer services, resources, and opportunities to help communities across the hemisphere participate in and benefit from hummingbird conservation activities. Our vision is " Helping hummingbirds survive, reproduce, and thrive while human communities benefit economically, socially, and ecologically from their hummingbird conservation activities."

Governance

This organization files the short tax form, which does not ask about boards, policies or audits. That is normal for a small charity and is not a mark against it.

Impact evidence

Describes programs. Its tax return describes what it does but we have found no measurable results in it.

Programs described in its return (3)
  1. $18,833 spent. RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION: Dr. Sergio Diaz-Infante and Dra. Elsa Figueroa continued the research studying hummingbird/plant interactions and investigating conservation needs for a threatened hummingbird species in Nayarit. We completed work at a high-elevation and mid-elevation study site to understand how hummingbirds and their nectar plants vary across an elevational gradient. We continued working with the El Cuarenteño community with STEAM activities for primary - high school students and collecting seeds for future restoration efforts.
  2. $23,493 spent. MONITORING: Trend monitoring continues at sites in BC, UT, CO, NM, AZ, MT, and ID. We offered a a short course to learn hummingbird banding and monitoring techniques. We also began a partnership with Limn Research to continue offering high precision tools for hummingbird and all bird research activities. This year, Rafe Copeland, the founder of Limn Research, worked with us to design and develop the next series of tools needed to continue expanding the monitoring programs.
  3. $8,000 spent. In partnership with Assistant Media Group, we continued online outreach that informs, markets, and fundraises with online services, social media, websites, and digital libraries. We continued to develop conservation crafts in the Nayarit communities.
