As a part of You're Not Special: The Collaborative Playwrighting Project, Faction commissioned, developed, and premiered a new play by Doug Robinson, THE SHEPHERD PLAY. The company generated this play collaboratively over four devising workshops (totaling 17 days) between November 2024 and March 2025, culminating in a world premiere staged reading presentation on March 8 at The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop to an audience of 46. Faction will continue to develop this play in preparation for a 2027 world premiere production. HOW THE SAUSAGE GETS MADE was developed and produced at The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, serving an audience of 678. The script for this production was written entirely by the cast of actors. In new works, Faction involves its diverse group of artists early in the creative process, allowing performers to craft their roles and steer the direction of the story. The production received a Helen Hayes recommendation, an enthusiastic audience reaction, and positive critical reviews. Education is at the core of Factions mission of preserving, celebrating, and promoting the classical theatre style of Commedia dell'Arte. This past season, Faction served 342 students through free and paid workshops and performances. As a part of its commitment to make Commedia training accessible for local artists, Faction annually provides a free professional workshop. This year, Faction provided 6 hours of free training to 15 local actors. These workshops provide a pathway to working for the company. This past year, one of the training participants was brought on to understudy for HOW THE SAUSAGE GETS MADE. The company is particularly proud to have offered a free performance of its touring show A COMMEDIA ROMEO AND JULIET to 150 students at Smothers Elementary in NE DC, a Title 1 school with a frozen spending budget. This performance, valued at $2,500 was provided free as a part of Factions dedication to provide free and subsidized programming to its DC student community.
