- SIF supports the National Air and Space Administration (NASA), the Department of Defense, Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), the Office of Space Commerce and industry at large in the development of open space standards. In 2024 emphasis was for Space Exploration, Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO), On-Orbit Servicing (OOS) and future space science programs. NASA DARPA, DoD, DoC and industry believe RPO and OOS, and open standards are emergent commercial mission areas and that the US can become a dominant commercial provider. SIF provides expertises on the standards development process within national and international standards development organizations, and recommends consensus positions in the development of industry consensus with US and international industry.
