THE NEW SPACE IS INCREASING PROGRAM CAPACITY, INCLUDING THE INCREASE OF THE FEDERALLY-FUNDED EARLY HEAD START CLASSROOMS FROM FOUR TO SIX, EQUIPPING GSS TO SERVE 16 MORE CHILDREN AGES SIX MONTHS TO TWO YEARS. ADDITIONAL SPACE FOR THE CENTER'S LAUDED OLDER ADULTS AND YOUTH PROGRAMS HAS ALSO BEEN CREATED. THIS INCLUDES A HIGHLY-REGARDED TECHNOLOGY CLUBHOUSE THAT FOCUSES ON STEM PROGRAMS FOR LOCAL TEENS AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. THE NEW KITCHEN WILL PREPARE HIGH-QUALITY, CULTURALLY-APPROPRIATE FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE WHO USE THE BUILDING, SERVE AS HOME BASE FOR GSS'S LARGE WEEKLY FOOD PANTRY, AND CAN SERVE AS AN IMPORTANT FOOD DISTRIBUTION CENTER IN CASE OF A NATURAL DISASTER OR OTHER EMERGENCY. EXPANSION: EARLY CHILDHOOD EXPANSION TO THE BRONX AND NEW BROOKLYN NEIGHBORHOODS: IN JULY 2024, GRAND STREET RECEIVED A $18.4M FEDERAL HEAD START AWARD TO EXPAND 583 PRE-K SLOTS FOR FAMILIES IN SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OUR 108-YEAR HISTORY, THE BRONX. THIS AWARD MEANS WE WILL SERVE BRONX COMMUNITIES WITH FOUR NEW HEAD START SITES WITH 453 FAMILY SLOTS. IN BROOKLYN, WE WILL NOW OPERATE A NEW HEAD START SITE THAT WILL SERVE 130 NEW FAMILIES. THIS NEW STEP MEANS GRAND STREET'S OPERATING BUDGET WILL INCREASE BY 30%, AND 140 NEW EMPLOYEES WILL JOIN THE AGENCY, INCREASING OUR WORKFORCE BY 28%. IN FY25, GSS BEGAN A COMPREHENSIVE 18-MONTH ROLL OUT, INCLUDING THE SECURING OF FIVE NEW LEASES, RENOVATIONS, PERMITTING, STAFF RECRUITMENT, AND ENROLLMENT.
