Programs described in its return (1)
  1. $243,003 spent. New York City Players had a robust year of programming in 2024 involving exciting new performance opportunities and collaborations. NYCPS Incoming Theater Divisions 2024 edition significantly expanded the scope and budget of the annual project with a production of Federico Garca Lorcas play LA CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA, directed by Richard Maxwell and performed in Spanish with English supertitles at a site specific excavated storefront in the Financial District of Manhattan. This project was made in partnership and collaboration with the visual artist Christopher Wool, who invited NYCP to use the ground floor of a building he leased in the Financial District for the venue of a show of his own sculptures, See Stop Run, on a different floor there. This opportunity to create a performance especially for the particulars of this raw storefront space coincided with ITDs desire to perform a classic. LA CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA resonated with ITDs mostly female and Spanish- speaking ensemble and the group decided it was best to perform the play in the original Spanish. The play had a sold out run of 10 performances in June of 2024. Also in June, NYCP held its annual Summer School workshop. Summer School is a week-long interdisciplinary training open to participants from all artistic disciplines using Richard Maxwells book on collaboration and performance, "Theater for Beginners" (TCG, 2015). After a hiatus due to the pandemic, the series returned in 2023. Maxwell has led the past two editions with Gillian Walsh at The Brick Aux space in Williamsburg. The 2024 edition was held for 10 participants from June 18th23rd. Summer School provides important access for a diverse group of participants to the companys artmaking process, expanding our NYCP community. In October, NYCP participated in the Toronto International RUTAS festival in staging Documents Perform | Documentos Actan, which invited remote participants to collectively hack and rewrite Canadas Joint Declaration on the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity to make it speak to the need for a blueprint that supports sustained artistic co-creation and collaboration in the Americas. The project was an international collaboration between NYCPs Incoming Theater Division, Hemispheric Encounters, and Aluna Theatre. At the conclusion of the performance, the new policy was read aloud in English and Spanish, ratified, and sent to the appropriate federal ministers, with the spectators as witness.Work on the final production of the season began in July with the residency and performances of BUILDINGS I&II (Formerly CODA). Our second collaboration with See Stop Run, BUILDINGS I&II, a two-part play, was staged and built for the 19th floor within Christopher Wools exhibition. Written and directed by Richard Maxwell, the project featured a cast of 8 performers, with 3 members for whom it was their first time performing on the stage. BUILDINGS I&II is the story of a large Irish American family whose patriarch has died leaving behind an asset in the form of an office tower. The play was a response to the exhibition See Stop Run, but it was also a response to the current Wall Street landscape (or commercial real estate everywhere), post pandemic. A landscape that is either mid-catastrophe or in the process of radical rebirth, depending on who you ask.The show had a sold-out run of 13 performances from September 19th October 6th.
